What Is Supported Employment and Who Qualifies?

April 25, 2026 • Super Admin

Supported Employment (SE) is a service that helps individuals with significant disabilities obtain and maintain real jobs in the competitive labor market — working alongside people without disabilities, earning at least minimum wage.

Who Qualifies?

In Maryland, Supported Employment is available to individuals who receive DDA waiver services and have a documented developmental disability or ASD. There is no minimum age requirement for adults, and services can begin as young as 14 through pre-employment transition services.

What Does It Include?

  • Job exploration and career interests assessment
  • Resume writing and interview preparation
  • Job development — working with employers to find the right match
  • On-the-job training and job coaching
  • Long-term follow-along support to maintain employment
